Coastal communities who depend on fishing for livelihoods are used to dealing with change and uncertainty: working at sea is dangerous; catches and prices are unpredictable; stocks fluctuate; fishing regulations change. This four-year research project, based at the University of Strathclyde and supported by the Wellcome Trust, will ask those who live and work in fishing communities to reflect on ways in which changes in their industry since c.1960 have impacted health and wellbeing. At a time when accelerating environmental change threatens all of our wellbeing, this project will seek to learn from oral histories of those whose way of life is uniquely entwined with the ocean’s ecosystems.
